Orange (fresh)
Description
Fresh orange has an intense, sweet-tart flavor with a distinct citrus aromatic note and juicy flesh under a smooth, orange skin. The slices are easy to separate, and the peel contains valuable aroma and oils. Rich in vitamin C, folate, potassium, and fiber (pectins), the orange provides few calories, acts as an antioxidant, and supports immunity, skin health, and the circulatory system, as well as improving iron absorption. In the kitchen, it works well both raw, in juices and salads, as well as in sauces, marinades, baked goods, desserts, and cocktails; the peel adds aroma to both sweet and savory dishes, pairing well with fish, poultry, nuts, and chocolate. For storage, cool, dry conditions are best: keep in the refrigerator in the fruit drawer for up to 1–2 weeks, avoiding sealing in airtight bags; once cut, store in a tightly sealed container and consume within 48 hours.
