Star anise
Description
Star anise is a hard, brown spice in the shape of a star with 6–8 points, each containing shiny seeds. Its flavor is intensely anise-like, sweet-spicy, and slightly peppery, reminiscent of licorice, with a warm, aromatic scent. As a decorative and aromatic ingredient, it adds depth and freshness to dishes. Nutritionally, star anise provides small amounts of fiber and minerals, but its most valuable component is the content of essential oils, especially anethole, and antioxidants. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, may aid digestion, and soothe upper respiratory ailments. In the kitchen, it is used in broths, Asian dishes (e.g., pho), marinades, baking, compotes, and infusions. Whole star anise should be stored in an airtight, opaque container, away from heat and moisture; ground star anise quickly loses its aroma.
