Pine nuts
Description
Pine nuts are small, elongated seeds with a creamy, buttery texture and a subtly sweet, slightly resinous aroma, usually with a light, pearly color. They are rich in healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, provide protein, fiber, vitamins (especially E and B vitamins), and minerals such as magnesium, iron, zinc, and manganese; they also contain phytosterols and antioxidants that support heart health, metabolism, and skin condition, although due to their high calorie content, it is advisable to use them in moderation. In the kitchen, they work well in pesto, salads, vegetable dishes, fish and poultry, in bread and baked goods, and as a crunchy addition to desserts and creams; briefly toasting enhances their flavor. They are best stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator, and for longer storage in the freezer to prevent rancidity.
