Ground turmeric
Description
Ground turmeric is a fine, intensely yellow-orange powder with an earthy, slightly bitter, and spicy aroma, featuring notes of pepper and ginger. It gives dishes a vibrant color and a warm, spicy flavor, so only a small amount is needed to enhance a dish. Nutritionally, it is low in calories and contains trace amounts of protein and fat, as well as minerals such as iron and manganese; the most important active compound is curcumin, which in studies shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and may support digestion and joint health. In the kitchen, turmeric works well in curries, soups, marinades, rice, dressings, and "golden milk" beverages, and it pairs well with black pepper, which enhances absorption. Store in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry, and dark place, protecting it from moisture and light; best used within 6–12 months.
